Blacklist score: 8. Blacklist review: The writer has found an excellent premise for a sweeping, historical drama in the titular event, and the strike and its brutal response will likely be unknown to a great deal of its prospective readership. The sheer amount of research that has clearly gone into these pages cannot be praised enough. From political mechanics to corporate minutiae to environmental detail, LUDLOW is brimming with a verisimilitude that is exceedingly rare even among other period specs. The thematic relevance of this story to our own contemporary political life and labor concerns is obvious and energizing. The script's panoramic sweep is dizzying in a good way as it traverses class, gender, and ethnicity to explore the proceedings from a multitude of perspectives.
Though one cannot make guarantees, LUDLOW is the kind of period spec that would actually stand a chance of reaching the screen while its contemporaries flounder. The combination of theme and subject matter makes it not so difficult to imagine a refined draft becoming the passion project of a bankable(probably directing) talent with the clout to see it made. Most period specs are dead on arrival due to their sheer cost, but something about the political import here feels quite different. Ultimately, it is abundantly clear that LUDLOW is the work of a truly devoted writer, so regardless of its prospects (which, again, are surprisingly favorable), it is obvious that there's no world in which they don't continue to invest in its success.
